Candidates for the third Laguna Woods board of directors on the ballot – Orange County Register
The third annual Laguna Hills Mutual Board of Directors elections will be held soon.
Six candidates are on the ballot for three seats on the Third Council, with terms ending in the 2024 annual election: Jim Cook, Lynn Jarrett, Reza Karimi, Mark Laws, Nathaniel Lewis and Karen Shore.
The ballots were mailed to members of Third Mutual.
The deadline for returning ballots is 11:30 a.m. on September 30, if they are sent to the Election Inspector’s mailbox.
If the ballots are hand-delivered to the community center ballot box, the deadline is September 30 at 5 p.m.
The ballots will be compiled on October 1.
Name: James Clayton Cook (Jim Cook)

Personal statement: I have the education, political know-how and practical experience to make a valuable contribution to the board of directors of the third mutual. I want to reduce costs by eliminating duplication of services and be open and available to residents’ concerns. Residents should be treated as valued customers, not bugs.
What improvement or change do you think would improve life in the village for its residents? Changing the rules of the third mutual for the changes and handing over responsibility for the process to the Town of Laguna Woods, saving residents time and money.
Name: Lynn Jarrett

Profession / business experience: The main career experience has been managing an IT department in the field of information technology in the publishing field, implementing a help desk (such as our services to residents), updating systems and networks. Has been a columnist for a national technical magazine. After his career, he was a business consultant in the Peace Corps in Ukraine, followed by similar assignments in three other Eurasian countries.
Laguna Woods Village Affiliations / Activities: Third Mutual Board Officer (Secretary) and Chairman of three committees and member of other Third and GRF committees. Treasurer of the Roberts Rules Study Club, building captain of the Garden Villa Association for 12 years, former president of GVA (2014-2018) and current advisor to the board of directors of GVA. Member of Bridge, Chicago and PC clubs. Former vice-president and former treasurer of the Niftys Club.
Personal statement: Currently a member of the board of directors of Third Mutual as an officer (secretary), chair of three committees and member of other committees for Third and GRF. Have exemplary knowledge of governing documents, Davis-Sterling law, parliamentary procedure and have studied complex insurance documents. Experience and the ability to collaborate effectively and be an influencer on boards of directors is essential.
What improvement or change do you think would improve life in the village for its residents? Promote a campaign to inspire residents to turn grass into great alternatives to save water and maintenance, separate from those done by landscaping.

I oversaw and participated in the development and implementation of streamlined organizational structures and procedures designed to increase the efficiency and productivity of business and government operations. I have several publications in scientific journals and many presentations at national and international conferences. Was appointed by the federal government (by the White House) to serve for three full terms (2005 to 2014) on the EPA’s Scientific Advisory Board (ELAB) on laboratory matters, former member of the board of trustees of the ‘International Association of Environmental Laboratories, former member of Battelle’s international operations board.

Personal Statement: The opportunity to serve and improve the environment around me is a lifelong commitment that I have faithfully executed with success. I have a great experience in the management of multifaceted projects dealing with human resources and financial constraints. I have successfully overseen multi-million dollar projects and will bring the same zeal to problems here in the Village. The chance to have a meaningful impact on the community is an opportunity that I cannot shy away from.
What improvement or change do you think would improve life in the village for its residents? I will continue to work on our insurance issue until we get a policy with the best coverage at the lowest possible cost for Third Mutual. This will help us manage our assessment for years to come.

Mainly IT management positions helping organizations increase productivity, reduce costs and increase customer satisfaction by identifying and implementing process and technology improvements. Managed consistently within allocated multi-million dollar budgets.

Personal Statement: My professional experience and work ethic have prepared me for the challenges we face at Third Mutual. If I am elected, I will ask a lot of questions so that the board understands the financial impacts of the decisions it is asked to make, in order to maintain services and amenities without increasing monthly assessments.
What improvement or change do you think would improve life in the village for its residents? Maintain or reduce monthly appraisals so that existing and potential owners are not billed by Third Mutual, resulting in a drop in property values.

Shortly thereafter, I became a jewelry design and manufacture company for a nationwide retail customer base. I have also added a diamond and colored gemstone division to improve service to our customers. Continued until retirement in 2010.

What improvement or change do you think would improve life in the village for its residents? Only one! I would work to shorten the response times and operations of the Third Council and VMS by improving communication and action between residents and management.

What improvement or change do you think would improve life in the village for its residents? VMS needs to better maintain our property and strengthen enforcement against violations. These require periodic inspections of common areas by golf cart and on foot.
