Employment rates are on the rise in 2021
The Student Professional Development Center reported increased engagement and placement among 2021 graduates compared to the 2020 class, whose career opportunities were severely limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The SPDC has expanded its presence through several career centers on campus, helping students explore majors, create resumes, search for jobs and internships, and apply for graduate studies. Brooke Buffington, director of the SPDC, wrote in an email to Elon News Network that a large number of students were using SPDC resources and their numbers had increased in 2021.
âStudent and alumni engagement in the office has increased this year, which means we’ve been able to help more of Elon’s students and alumni meet their professional development needs,â Buffington wrote. . âOver 90% of our students participate in one way or another in our office upon graduation. ”
The SPDC’s 2020 results report shows that 90% of graduates have accepted a position related to their career goals. The SPDC is unable to provide the results report for the 2021 class at this time due to data collection. Destin Flloyd ’21 worked with the SPDC in 2020 and 2021 and found that after a year to adjust and regroup economic fluctuations caused by the
pandemic, companies have started to hire again. âDuring my junior year, it was really more difficult to find an internship [and] work because it was the height of COVID-19 and a lot of companies weren’t hiring at all, âFlloyd wrote in an email to Elon News Network. “But over the last year I think recruiting has returned to a bit of normalcy and was at times easier as companies were more willing to do remote interviews as well as remote positions.”
After the pandemic outbreak, most jobs in the United States are now available in 2021. The SPDC has been able to help many students secure post-graduation jobs as unemployment rates decline .
âThe 2021 class saw an improvement in the labor market this spring, as companies increased their entry-level hiring opportunities and the economy began to re-open nationwide,â he said. writes Buffington. âWe continue to see recent graduates getting jobs this summer, and organizations tell us they are looking for entry-level talent to fill the vacancies.â
Flloyd used Elon Job Network, a job and internship database that provides connections and opportunities for students, to find his job. He is now working as a financial analyst after having been in research for two months.
âThe SPDC was definitely fundamental,â Flloyd wrote. âFrom CV writing to interview preparation and job search, the SPDC has been there to help. ”
