Methodology and results

Based on Ethisphere’s proprietary ethics quotient®, the World’s Most Ethical Companies assessment process includes more than 200 culture data points; environmental and social practices; ethics and compliance activities; governance; diversity, equity and inclusion; and initiatives that support a strong value chain. The process serves as an operational framework to capture and codify best practices from organizations across industries and around the world.

This year, the assessment has been updated to include questions about programmatic changes made in response to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. It also included a new area around risk assessment, to better respond to the US Department of Justice’s recent emphasis on the effectiveness of a company’s risk assessment efforts; more detailed questions on key impact assessment processes; and a series of other updates to reflect the changing landscape regarding ethics, compliance and governance.

All companies that participate in the judging process receive an analytical scorecard that provides information on key trends among winning companies and where their programs stand against the class of winning companies. Candidates also receive a three-month associate membership in the Business Ethics Leadership Alliance (BELA).
