No course or occupation restrictions: Tasmanian updates visa requirements

The Australian state of Tasmania has updated its requirements for the 2022-23 Skilled Migration States Nomination Program.

As states await confirmation from the Australian government on awarding nominations for the 2022-23 program year, Tasmania says its program will open with different requirements and processes in the new financial year.

Key features of the new program will include:

For graduates

– No course or occupation restrictions or mandatory employment requirements.
– Permanent course for doctoral students.

For qualified employees

  • An expanded list of professions and jobs eligible for Subclass 190 permanent visa appointment.
  • No occupational requirement for subclass 491.
  • Inclusion of part-time employment to meet work experience requirements.
  • Contractors with a related skills assessment included in the skilled employment pathway. For economic operators
  • Extension of the qualifying commercial operation period from six to twelve months for commercial activities that began after April 15, 2022.
  • Introduction of a new personal business income requirement, set at a minimum of 80% of TSMIT (i.e. $43,120).

For long-term residents

  • A new nomination pathway for applicants who have lived in Tasmania for a long period and have established themselves in a job or business.
  • Qualifying residence period of at least three years for the permanent subclass 190 visa designation, or two years for the temporary subclass 491 visa.
  • Business operators will be eligible for Subclass 190 nomination if they have lived in Tasmania for two years and successfully run their qualifying business for two years.

For foreign applicants

  • No occupancy restrictions when a candidate has a job offer.
  • More invitations to apply for the Skillselect appointment where candidates have the skills required by Tasmanian businesses.
  • New Industry Skill Needs Profiles to help potential candidates tailor their EOI Skillselect to increase the chances of being invited.

For all applicants:

  • Simplified eligibility conditions.
  • Invitation only – applicants will be able to express interest in Tasmania’s nomination in the Migration Tasmania Gateway if they meet the minimum eligibility requirements, and the most competitive will be able to apply for the nomination.
  • More clearly defined exclusions and exceptions regarding employment and business roles and location of dependents.
  • Clear sets of prioritized attributes published, describing additional characteristics needed to be competitive. Only candidates who meet the competitive threshold will be invited to apply for nomination. These attributes will include: § duration and industry of employment § employment in skilled roles that are critical to the Tasmanian economy § links between employment, skills assessment and education § rate of pay relative to Australian average and median § nature, level and duration of Tasmanian study § completion of study-related work placements § employment opportunities for graduates § duration and success of business activity § level of investment, turnover and local employment § length of residence in Tasmania § English proficiency § location, length of residence, employment and skills of dependents.
