Nordic red deer (RDN) is looking to hire a full-time Head Coach to lead our winter programs throughout the 2021/22 season. RDN is the youth programs division of the Parkland Cross-Country Ski Club and is based in Red Deer, Alberta. A growing club of approximately 175 members, RDN currently offers programs for ages 5-18. Reporting to the Red Deer Nordic Executive Committee, the Head Coach is responsible for delivering the Learn to Train (L2T), Train to Train (T2T) and Learn to Compete (L2C) Youth Programs ) aligned with Nordiq Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model for 25-35 athletes aged 9-18.

Host city of the 2019 Canada Winter Games, Red Deer has an incredible winter sports community with a wide selection of activities, amenities and local activities year-round. In season, skiers have access to FIS-approved competition courses, 30 km of groomed Nordic trails, a 4 km lighted ski network for night skiing and excellent recreational sites ideal for training. on snow, as well as dry skiing and roller skiing. Coaching duties will include developing training plans for our young Track Attack and RDN athletes, designing and leading training sessions, and training at fall and winter training camps. The successful candidate will work with our volunteer assistant coaches and participate in regional, provincial and possibly national competitions. The head coach is also responsible for the growth of cross-country skiing in our community. The position includes dry terrain training sessions (October to the start of the snow season) and snow training sessions through the end of March. The position will require travel, as well as evening and weekend work.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Minimum high school diploma

Professional qualifications :

  • Certified in L2T and T2C, or in training with estimated completion in 1 year
  • Valid first aid certificate
  • Criminal record check and vulnerable sector check

Experience:

  • The ideal candidate will be a skier with coaching experience at the junior or senior racing level working with cross-country skiers
  • A first coaching experience is required
  • Coaches must be able to run, ski and roller ski with athletes and demonstrate good technique in classic and skating techniques
  • Waxing and race support experience
  • Administrative tasks

Specific responsibilities:

  • Conduct safe, fun, and developmentally appropriate practices for Track Attack and RDN programs, with support from volunteer coaches and parents
  • Ensuring a safe and inclusive sporting environment for everyone involved
  • Prepare and maintain a seasonal training program for groups of athletes (or individuals) aged 10-18
  • Design and lead training sessions on snow and dry terrain delivered on weeknights and weekends
  • Communicate with the Red Deer Nordic Youth Committee and attend monthly meetings upon request
  • Work closely with assistant coaches to provide fun and well-organized practices
  • Communicate with athletes and families on schedules and upcoming events
  • Coordinate and attend out-of-town races and camps
  • Provide race support including attending coaches meetings, waxing tests, ski preparation and race day coordination
  • Design a summer training program for our L2C athletes to follow on their own
  • Play a key leadership role and help mentor and support volunteer coaches offering RDN’s Jackrabbits and Youth Learn to Ski programs
  • Liaise with Nordiq Alberta and other regional club coaches to keep abreast of evolving issues affecting the delivery of programming
  • Developing RDN Profile in Central Alberta
  • Represent RDN ethically and professionally when engaging with partners and the public, including on social media

Conditions of employment:

This is a full-time contractual position starting October 1, 2021 and ending March 31, 2022 and offers a competitive salary commensurate with previous experience. The successful candidate may be offered the opportunity to renew their contract at the end of the season.

Red Deer Nordic is committed to the continued professional development of its coaches and will reimburse fees associated with certification and courses.

The head coach must maintain a clean criminal record for the duration of his employment.

Salary:

Work contracted under this agreement will be remunerated at a flat rate of $ 3,150 per month upon receipt of the Contractor’s invoices. Additional funds are available for the following:

  • $ 1,000 per year will be available for travel to RDN youth training-related running events (in the form of receipts for gas, meals and accommodation), and for other reasonable operating costs that may be incurred. are in accordance with a pre-approved budget and directly related to fulfilling these responsibilities.
